Taking Control - The HeartMath Solution
Taking Control - The HeartMath Solution
Research by The Heartmath Institute has shown time and time again that emotions are reflected in our heart's rhythmic patterns. Feelings of frustration and anxiety cause the heart's rhythms to become more distorted and irregular, and this inhibits the way the brain processes information.
Simply put, when we lose control of our emotions our heart reacts - sending messages of distress to the brain which then interrupts the ability of the brain to think clearly.
The key strength to the HeartMath solution is in its simplicity and application; it has been used in sports, education and business, and is a proven and effective tool that allows the "ideal performance state".
So if you find yourself in a situation where you need to regain control, try this practical ritual:
- Heart Focus: Focus your attention on the area of your heart. If it helps put your hand over your heart to help you focus.
- Heart Breathing: As you focus on the area of your heart pretend that your breath is flowing in and out through that area. Breathe slowly - gently in through your heart to the count of 5 and gently release out through your heart to the count of 6
- Heart Feeling: Continue to breathe through the area of your heart. As you do so, recall a positive feeling - a time when you felt positive inside - and allow yourself to re-experience it. Just imagine a time when you felt deep appreciation for a person, place or experience.
